Evaluating Religious Claims with the biblical Gospel

It is essential that Christians evaluation any and all religious, spiritual, philosophical, and scientific claims with the biblical gospel. Our pattern is that of the Bereans in Acts 17:11. The Apostle Paul taught us to test al things (1 Thessalonians 5:21). The following outline can be use in personal study, group Bible Studies, and Sunday School classes to guide in such evaluations.
I. The Bible’s warns and commands us to evaluate religious claims.
- 1 Timothy 4:1, 2 A prophecy of latter day false religion.
- 2 Timothy 3:13 In the end times, deceivers will become increasingly worse.
- 2 Timothy 4:3, 4 A time when people will not hear sound teachings.
- Acts 17:11 Bereans were more noble because they evaluated Paul’s claims.
- 1 John 4:1 “try (test) the spirits.”
- 1 Thessalonians 5:21 we are to test all things.
II. A very strong warning and condemnation of departing from the authentic gospel.
- The Warning - Galatians 1:6, 7
- The Double Condemnation - Galatians 1:7-8
III. Our measuring stick, our standard for measuring religious claims is the biblical gospel.
- What is it that the Galatians had departed from? (the gospel)
- What then can we use as our measuring stick or standard to evaluate religious claims? (the gospel)
IV. Where in the Bible is the gospel plainly defined?
- 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 (read and then go through as follows…)
- It is received (The action was done by God.)
- It is wherein we (Christians) stand (Gk. abide or continue).
- It is what saves.
- It must be believed.
- how that Christ died for our sins, according to the scriptures
- that He was buried,that He rose again the third day, according to the scriptures.
V. Who is Jesus Christ, according to the scriptures?
- Matthew 1:18 Jesus was born in a miraculous way to the Virgin Mary.
- John 4:25, 26 Jesus is the Messiah promised in the Old Testament. See also Isaiah 53: 1-10.
- John 1:1-9; 8:58 Jesus is God.
- Romans 6:23 Jesus Christ gives salvation as a free gift to the believing sinner.
- Galatians 2:16 Jesus justifies by faith in Him.
- Ephesians 3:9 Jesus created all things.
- Philippians 3:9 Jesus makes us righteous by faith in Him.
- Colossians 1:14 Jesus redeems us by His death.
- Colossians 1:15 Jesus is the image of the invisible God.
- Colossians 2:9 All the fullness of God is in Jesus.
- 1 Timothy 1:15 Jesus came to save sinners.
- 1 Timothy 2:5 Jesus is mankind’s only mediator – one who intervenes between two parties to reconcile, or resolve, their differences.
- Titus 3:5 Jesus saves us according to His mercy, not our works.
- Hebrews 7:25 Jesus saves completely.
- Hebrews 8:1, 2 Jesus is our only High Priest.
- 1 Peter 2:24 Jesus born our sins in His own body.
- 1 John 5:10-13 Faith in Jesus results in eternal life.
- Revelation 5 Jesus will judge all mankind.
VI. How did Jesus die for our sins?
- John 18 – 21 The death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
- Romans 5:8 Jesus loved us and while we were sinners He died for us.
- 1 Peter 2:24 Jesus Christ bore our sins in His own body on the cross.
VII. What is meant by “our sins?”
- Psalm 14: 2, 3 All mankind is evil by nature.
- Isaiah 64:6 Even our so-called “righteous acts” are sins.
- Jeremiah 17:9 The natural condition of man’s heart is deceit and wickedness.
- Matthew 5:22-28 Even our wrong attitudes and thoughts are sin.
- Matthew 5:48 God’s standard is perfection – He is perfect.
- Luke 10:27 We are to love God with all our heart, soul, strength, mind; and to love our fellowman.
- Romans 3:23 All men have fallen short of God’s glory.
- Romans 14:23 Whatever is not done out of faith is sin.
- Galatians 3:22 The Bible concludes that all are under sin.
- 1 John 1:8 If we claim to have no sin, we are liars.
- 1 John 5:19 The whole world is in a state of wickedness.

What does the sinful state of mankind indicate?
- Isaiah 59:1, 2 Our sins separate us from God.
- Romans 3:19 All are guilty before a Holy God.
- Romans 7:17 - 21 Sin and evil are ever present in mankind.
- Romans 8:7 The natural (unsaved) man is an enemy of God.
- 1 Corinthians 2:14 It is impossible for the natural man to know the things of God.
- Ephesians 2:1-4 Natural (unsaved) mankind is dead in sins.
- Ephesians 4:17 - 19 Natural man is alienated from God.
- Colossians 1:13 Unsaved people are controlled by the power of darkness.
- Colossians 3:6 Unsaved people are under the wrath of God.
- Titus 3:3-5 Man’s nature is debased and his “works of righteousness” cannot save himself; but needs to be justified by God’s grace.
VIII. The gospel must be believed. We must have faith in it and its author.
- Mark 1:14,15 Jesus said to repent - means “to turn” - and believe.
- John 16:7, 8 The Holy Spirit must convict them.
- Acts 17:30 God commands all people to repent.
- Acts 20:21 Paul’s life message was that of repentance toward God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
- Romans 1:16 The gospel is the power for salvation for believers.
- Galatians 5:6 Religious ceremony is of no avail, only faith.
- Ephesians 2:8-10 Faith is a gift from God.
- Philippians 3:9 Righteousness comes through faith in Jesus.
- Hebrews 11:6 Faith is necessary to please God.
IX. We must receive the gospel.
- John 1:12, 13 We must receive Jesus Christ.
- John 6:44 The father must draw sinners to salvation.
X. What does it mean to be saved?
- John 1:12,13 We become a child of God.
- John 3:3-21 We become born again.
- John 5:24 We will have everlasting life and not come under God’s condemnation.
- Acts 10:43 We receive remission of sins. (Notice that we do not earn it.)
- Acts 13:39 We are justified: declared righteous, innocent or holy.
- Romans 5:11 We receive the atonement: reconciliation or restoration with God.
- 2 Corinthians 5:17 We become a new creature.
- Ephesians 4:24 We become a new man.
- Hebrews 10:10-14 We are perfected by Jesus Christ.
- Titus 3:5 We are regenerated.
- 2 Peter 1:4 We become partakers of the God’s nature.
- 1 John 3:9 The new man that is our true self does not sin.
- Hebrews 10:39 Our soul is saved through faith.
- Hebrews 11:6 We must have faith in order to come to God.
- 1 John 5:4, 5, 13 Faith in Jesus overcomes the world and results in eternal life.
XI. What about “according to the scriptures,” which is said twice in 1 Corinthians 15?
- Matthew 24:35 The words of Christ will not pass away.
- John 5:39 Jesus told us to search the scriptures to learn of Him eternal life. J
- John 12:48 The words of Jesus will be used to judge us.
- John 20:30, 31 Scriptures written to provide faith.
- 2 Timothy 3:15 The scriptures contain the wisdom that leads to salvation.
- Manuscript evidence, Archaeology, History, Science, Logic, etc. demonstrate that the Bible is reliable.
