Webster's dictionary says that psychology is "the science of mind and behavior" (Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary, 1973). However, psychology is merely a man-made way of trying to explain humankind's mental, emotional, and behavioral processes. It stands in contrast to what God has revealed in His Word, the Bible.
The so-called "science" of psychology has devised literally hundreds of systems to explain human thought and behavior, as well as hundreds of techniques to help people change their mental attitudes, their emotions, and their behavior. Many of these systems and techniques contradict one another. Psychology is a relatively new area of study, whereas God's revelation in the Bible about the psyche, or nature, of man is thousands of years old.
Additionally, the Bible is clear that it, not human-created ideas, is totally sufficient in giving us everything we need that pertains to life and godliness (1Peter 1:3). The Bible teaches in many places that we are to be changed, or transformed, by renewing our minds by focusing on Jesus Christ, not on human-created theories (Romans 12:2; Philippians 3:8-14).
Almost 2,000 years ago, the Bible warned us of false science that opposes the truth that God revealed (1 Timothy 6:20). Interestingly, the American Psychological Association commissioned a study that was subsidized by the National Science Foundation to determine the status of psychology. Dr. Sigmund Koch's stated the conclusion of the study in his seven-volume work, Psychology: A Study of a Science, "I think it by this time utterly and finally clear the psychology cannot be a coherent science." Italics are his. (Quoted in The Psychological Way/The Spiritual Way, by Martin & Deidre Bobgan, p. 44, Bethany House Publishers, 1979. See the website: www.psychoheresy-aware.org.
